Nissan recalls older-model Pathfinder, Infiniti QX4 SUVs

Nissan Motor Co Ltd recalled nearly 271,000 older-model Pathfinder and Infiniti QX4 SUVs in North America due to the chance that road salt and water could collect to cause a loss of steering, U.S. safety regulators said.

Affected in the United States and Canada are about 225,650 Pathfinders from model years 1996 to 2004 and about 45,330 Infiniti QX4 SUVs from model years 1997 to 2003.

The recall affects Pathfinders and QX4s in Canada and 20 cold-weather U.S. states where road salt is used to keep roads clear of snow and ice.

Road salt and melted snow can collect in the strut housing and may cause corrosion that could lead to difficulty in steering and even loss of steering, which could cause a crash, regulators said.

Nissan will inform customers of the recall be mid-May, and its dealers will inspect and fix the issue free of charge.

No injuries have been reported due to this issue and there is a report of an accident that was caused by it, but Nissan said that report could not be confirmed as linked to the corrosion issue.

Nissan said their tests have indicated that only a small portion of the recalled vehicles are expected to need repair.

Inspection at Nissan dealers should take a half hour to an hour but repair or replacement will take longer, said a Nissan spokesman.

TORRANCE, Calif. — Toyota is recalling about 51,000 of its Tundra trucks to inspect rear drive shafts that may include a component that could break.

Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. said Tuesday an estimated 0.5 percent of the vehicles may have a faulty slip yoke because of improper casting during the foundry process.

The company is aware of one slip yoke failure. There are no reports of accidents or injuries related to the condition.

The recall involves only Tundras from the 2011 model year.

Recall notification letters will be sent out starting next month and will be available on Toyota's web site.

Inspections and any replacements made will be free of charge.

Last week Toyota recalled more than 300,000 RAV4 and Highlander vehicles so it could fix an airbag issue.

Seven unique ways to drive to the prom

When actress Liv Tyler dished to Jimmy Fallon on her embarrassment of her dad Steven Tyler’s affinity for stretch limos, Fallon sympathized, observing that “people that go to proms use them.”

Prom season is upon us — wedding season too — and the last thing we would want is for our tres chic readers to accidentally fall into the cliché of arriving in something as passé as a, yawn, stretched Lincoln Town Car.

You can do better than a rattletrap, bar-equipped, sparkly-overhead-lighted limo. Here are some suggestions. (Do a web search for availability in your town.)

Stretched Hummer

Rather than a stretched Town Car, how about a stretched Hummer? Now that the brand has closed its doors you don’t have to worry about everyone having a Hummer, but you can still go for this offbeat alternative. It would be even better if you could find a car service that has one painted in desert camouflage rather than boring black or white paint.

Pink Range Rover

Speaking of attention-getting paint, how about a pink Range Rover limo? One that holds 18 passengers and is outfitted with 5 flat-screen TVs and a 4500-watt (!) sound system, like the one we found at ExoticCoach.com.

Gull-wing Chrysler 300

Maybe you like the idea of a car-based limo, but don’t want a stodgy old Town Car. Why not a Chrysler 300 limo? They look cooler and you can get them with features like flip-up gulling doors in place of regular hinged doors for even more curb presence. As a budget option, maybe just rent a regular 300 for a dash of style without breaking the bank.

Trolley limo

Maybe you’ve got a large group of friends who want to go together, but a stretch just isn’t the right vehicle even though it holds more passengers than a regular car. Consider a trolley limo. These are really buses, but they are built to look like old-time trolley cars. They can hold about 30 people with plenty of space to socialize before and after. And the rear balcony makes a great spot for photos.

Vintage British steel

Looking for something a little understated and graceful rather than over-the-top? How about a classic Rolls-Royce as prom or wedding conveyance. If arriving in an English-built ’59 Silver Cloud or ’60 Phantom doesn’t make a girl feel a bit like Kate Middleton, nothing will.

Bigger is better

Sometimes nothing succeeds like excess. And no transportation is more excessive than a bus. How about a 56-passenger coach with reclining seats, video entertainment, PA system and on-board restroom for some last-second primping?

Practical possibilities

Not everyone has the prom budget for a glam rental, and not every town has such options available anyway. Maybe you have a friend, neighbor, cousin or uncle with a cool car? Maybe dad can rent a luxury sedan? A borrowed Mercedes or Jaguar is a lot more special than the soccer mom SUV, but try to steer clear of dad’s mid-life crisis car (young people tend not to be impressed).

GM moves toward OK of Russian investor in Saab

General Motors Co.  said on Thursday it has given its tentative approval for Russian financier Vladimir Antonov to become a major shareholder in Spyker Cars' struggling Saab unit.

Antonov was also given the green light to invest in Saab by the Swedish Debt Office on Thursday. Antonov has applied to buy as much as 30 million euros ($44.4 million) for a stake in Saab of up to 29.9 percent.

GM sold Saab to Spyker in February 2010, but it still has redeemable preference shares in the brand and licenses technology to Saab.

GM said it has reached an agreement with Saab "on a construct which could allow for Vladimir Antonov's acquisition of a shareholder interest in Saab."

It added that the agreement "requires certain specific actions to be taken by Saab which have not yet been completed, as well as certain formal consents, approvals and waivers which Saab has not yet obtained."

Antonov said: "Finally we have managed to obtain a clean bill of health and we need to move fast forward to secure the cash flow of Saab Automobile. I hope all involved parties now further take on their responsibility so we can close all processes fast to secure the future of Saab."

It remains unclear, however, how quickly Antonov's money will be available. His plans still have to be approved by the Swedish government and by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which has lent 217 million euros to Saab, guaranteed by the Swedish state.

A former shareholder in Spyker, Antonov had to sell his shares in the Dutch group before it bought Saab from GM after reports in Swedish media of involvement with organized crime and money laundering. He has denied such allegations and has said he has cleared his name.

Spyker has been seeking to sell its factory in Trollhattan, Sweden, and Saab real estate to Antonov and then lease it back to free up cash.

Last week, the Swedish government backed the deal by allowing the National Debt Office to release its security in Saab property used to guarantee the EIB loan to Saab. The government said the deal still needed EIB approval. On Tuesday, Spyker said the bank had imposed new, strict conditions on Saab, GM and the Swedish National Debt Office and the Swedish government.

China talks

Saab says working on ways to raise money to prop up the company that do not need EIB approval. ''In parallel, we are working on the longer term financing solution, including talking with some Chinese companies,'' Saab spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs told Automotive News Europe on Thursday. She declined to name the companies involved.

Saab said on April 6 it was stopping production at its Trollhatten, Sweden, plant "until further notice" after some suppliers halted deliveries due to unpaid bills. The carmaker owes at least 300 million kronor ($49.1 million) to suppliers, according to FKG, a trade group representing Swedish auto suppliers.

On Wednesday, Saab told workers at a meeting that they were not needed back at work yet as the search for financing continues to enable the firm to restart production lines. "We gave them an update on where things stand,'' Gustavs said.

BMW, Mercedes chase Ford for iPhone crowd

MUNICH -- BMW is bringing Twitter and Facebook to the 5-series sedan as luxury auto brands play catch-up to Ford Motor Co. in the race for tech-savvy drivers.

BMW and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz are adding Internet and smartphone access to their vehicles as environmental concerns and consumer addiction to mobile devices shift the emphasis to high-tech gadgetry from horsepower.

"Mobile connectivity is playing an increasing role in all our lives," BMW sales chief Ian Robertson said at an event in Munich. "These services will continue to grow. It's a component of a competitive advantage."

Luxury automakers were slow to link their cars to the Internet because of concern about safety and allowing unfiltered data into their vehicles. The proliferation of mobile devices like Apple Inc.'s iPhone is changing that, while oil prices above $100 a barrel increases pressure on carmakers to find a selling point that isn't associated with burning fuel.

Mercedes began offering Internet access in vehicles for the first time this year with the upgraded C class and revamped SLK roadster.

BMW last month introduced a smartphone application that allows iPhone users to access playlists and browse tweets from the car's display. Audi will add real-time traffic data to its navigation service in Europe this summer.

Information control

"Luxury automakers were keen on controlling the flow of information in the car to preserve the brand experience, and that slowed down the rollout of services," said Anil Valsan, an analyst at Ernst & Young's automotive center in London. "The high-end vehicle market can't afford to lag anymore."

Ford provided connection to mobile devices when it launched Sync in 2007. The system, developed with Microsoft Corp., plays music on voice command and reads tweets to drivers.

Sync, which will be rolled out to Europe next year, has gained more than 3 million subscribers in North America.

General Motors Co. began offering the OnStar service in 1995. The system, which provides emergency support, navigation help and stolen-vehicle assistance, is available in more than 30 models in the U.S. and has more than 6 million users, Vijay Iyer, a GM spokesman, said in an e-mail.

Luxury automakers, which traditionally have been in the forefront of integrating technology into their vehicles, are facing greater competition from mass-market competitors in networking, said Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst with TrueCar.com, a Web site based in Santa Monica, California, that tracks auto market trends.

Brands like BMW and Mercedes have to prove they're worth the higher price and connectivity offerings are playing a bigger role, he said.

Connectivity

"Along with the name, people are paying for the technology in the car," Toprak said. "If you can get the same technology in a car half the price, the value goes down dramatically. They have to always be one-upping the mass market."

For high-end car buyers like Shien-Lin Garrett, in-car connectivity has become a must-have. The mother of four from Laguna Beach, California, uses apps on her iPhone to keep track of her busy schedule and entertain her kids.

She uses the phone's speaker function to make calls after struggling to link it to her Audi A4. "The iPhone is my life; I run everything on it," she said. "The only time I actually have to talk on the phone is while driving."

Internet browsing

Mercedes' Comand Online package costs 3,070 euros ($4,493) on the C class, including voice-recognition software and a system to monitor speed limits. The offering allows unlimited Internet browsing while the car is stationary but restricts access to data while driving to avoid distraction.

Mercedes plans to roll out the system to other models in the future, said Frank Bracke, a spokesman.

Mercedes is also experimenting with new ways to interact with the increasing amount of data in cars and showed a concept vehicle last year that tracks the driver's hand movements on a screen located on the center console.

BMW is experimenting with filtering data based on moods, such as selecting music within a range of emotions spanning from joyful to hopeless.

In the real world, BMW plans to follow Audi with live traffic data later this year. It's adding other gadgets, including a full-color display on the revamped 6 series this year. It introduced a smartphone app at the end of 2010 that allows users to lock their car and turn on the heat remotely.

The company also set up a $100 million venture-capital unit to buy stakes in companies offering transport-related businesses like the MyCityWay guide service.

Electric vehicles

BMW is likewise using apps to prepare the groundwork for its upcoming line of electric vehicles. Last week, it introduced a mobile phone application that determines whether a user's transportation habits are compatible with electric vehicles.

For people ready to spend more than $40,000 for a car, comfort and convenience are important, and vehicles need to fit into today's networked world, said Johan de Nysschen, Audi's U.S. chief.

"Customers are accustomed to having these connectivity benefits in their everyday life," he said. "There's no reason why we should imagine that when they get into their car suddenly they might have to be isolated from what's happening around the world."

Audi's expansion in Hungary challenged by environmentalists, report says

BUDAPEST -- Audi's expansion plans in Hungary have come under scrutiny after a local environmental group appealed against the land use permit issued to the automaker, news agency MTI reported.

Audi plans a 900-million-euro expansion of its Gyor plant in western Hungary to lift production to 125,000 vehicles a year, once it begins full production from 2013.

The automaker currently builds the A3 cabriolet, TT coupe and TT roadster at the plant and plans to produce the RS3 sportback and A3 sedan there too, creating 1,800 new jobs and giving a major boost to Hungary's export-driven economy.

The land use permit is a precondition for Audi to get full planning permission for the expanded plant, MTI said on Thursday.

It said the green group that filed the appeal was concerned that wildlife in the affected area -- which also includes part of a nature reserve – could be disturbed.

The group also says the ruling that approved the land use for the site contained procedural errors.

A Hungarian spokeswoman for Audi was not immediately available for comment. The National Environmental Protection Authority could not immediately comment.

In January, the European Commission approved the extension of the plant on the grounds of paramount public interest.

Opel, Daimler expand in Hungary

Earlier this month, the Hungarian government approved 11.2 billion forints ($62.88 million) of direct subsidies for Audi's expansion and another 5.5 billion forints for General Motors Co.'s Opel. Last year, the two carmakers announced expansion plans at their plants in the western Hungarian towns of Gyor and Szentgotthard worth a combined 1.4 billion euros.

Daimler AG's new 800-million-euro Mercedes plant in the central town of Kecskemet is also expected to start production in 2012.

Economy Minister Gyorgy Matolcsy said earlier this month, that these three projects combined would add 2 percentage points to the contribution of the car sector to Hungarian GDP, lifting it to about 5 percent of economic output from 3.1 percent.

That will also boost the contribution of car exports from 16 percent to 18 percent of all Hungarian exports in the years ahead, he said.

Porsche 918 Spyder and 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder Pricing Announced

With so much anticipation built up around the 918 concept cars—wantonly brandishing the Spyder and RSR race trim in the show circuit—Porsche would have been borderline unscrupulous not to bring the sexy hybrid into production. As it turns out, Porsche will build the supercar in its Spyder trim, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque and all. Except for the presence of a new roof (manually operated with removable panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment.
But before you rush to put down a deposit, the 918 Spyder is a bit more expensive than a 911. Listed at $845,000, it’s the equivalent of four and an eighth 911 Speedsters. But don’t let the numbers deter you, there’s so much more than fuzzy math to the 918. Take, for instance, its output. With a maximum estimated at 718 hp, it comes courtesy of a midship 500-bhp V-8 and two electric motors both good for 218 hp. Mounted on the front and rear axles, the electric motors act independently and endow the 918 with variable all-wheel drive.
Hybrid Powertrain, Supercar Performance
Fitted with a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox, the 918 Spyder has some lofty performance targets: 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds, a 199-mph top speed and the Nürburgring in under 7 minutes, 30 seconds—that’s 2 sec. quicker than the Carrera GT. And don’t forget, these numbers are for a plug-in hybrid. Porsche is throwing out efficiency figures of 94 mpg and 16 miles of range solely on its lithium-ion batteries.
Limited to 918 units, production for the 918 Spyder doesn’t start until September 18, 2013. Think 2013 holidays, if you’re well behaved. For the impatient types, there’s the 918 Spyder-edition 911 to hold you over.

Photos: Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder >>
If you can’t wait until late 2013, Porsche is placating buyers of the 918 Spyder by offering them an exclusive opportunity to purchase an “Edition 918 Spyder” 911. Based on the 530-bhp 911 Turbo S, the special-edition Porsche has carbon-fiber trim inside and out, plus upgraded leather, badging and the exterior colors of the 918, including the use of Acid Green on the brake calipers, illuminated sill plates, interior stitching and instrument cluster needles. Also limited to 918 units, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder will be available in Coupe ($160,700) and Cabriolet ($172,100) forms, making this one very expensive dealer option

Brabus boosts Mercedes-Benz's V8s

German tuner Brabus has introduced some new performance packages for the already quick Mercedes-Benz S- and CL-class cars. They push your standard model into AMG territory and AMG models into the stratosphere.

For the S500 and the CL500, Brabus offers the B50-490 PowerXtra CGI performance kits. The module plugs into the 4.7-liter V8's engine control computer and boosts power to 490 hp, up from 435 hp, and torque to 575 lb-ft. The Brabus B50-490 kit costs $7,190.

If that's not enough go, Brabus offers the B50-520 PowerXtra kit, which takes power to 520 hp and torque to 604 lb-ft. In combination with the Brabus Vmax unit, this bumps top speed to 188 mph. The Brabus B50-520 kit costs $8,658.

Brabus doesn't shy away from the AMG cars. For the S63 and the CL63 not equipped with the performance package, Brabus has the B63-584 performance kit, which upgrades power to--you guessed it--584 hp.

For the upgraded S63 and CL63, the Brabus unit takes power to 620 hp and torque to more than 700 lb-ft. The upgrade cuts 0-to-62-mph times in the coupe and the sedan to just 4.3 seconds with the upgrade. With the Brabus Vmax unit, top speed moves up to the double century mark.

All that power is great. But to really attract attention, order the two-mode exhaust. Only available with the 5.5-liter biturbo engine, the sport exhaust system has a flap that opens with the push of a button. It can be quiet and unobtrusive, according to the company, in "coming home" mode, or all-out throaty when you're leaving in a hurry in sport mode

2012 Honda Civic vs. 2011 Hyundai Elantra vs. 2012 Ford Focus

Any time there's a new Honda Civic, it's a big deal in the small-car market. The Civic, together with the Toyota Corolla, is one of longest-running nameplates in the field, and it regularly vies with the Corolla for the top spot in sales. This year, however, the new Civic is hardly the only big news in small cars. The past few months have also seen the introduction of an all-new Hyundai Elantra and an all-new Ford Focus, both vastly improved over their predecessors and both coming from companies that have been on a roll lately. It seemed natural to get the new Civic together with these upstarts to see how the freshest entries in the field compare.

The Many and the Few
The Civic is available in more different iterations than any other compact car. For the 2012 version, Honda has upped the count by one, adding a new HF high-fuel-economy model. The Civic already offers two body styles, coupe and sedan. There are a total of eight trim levels: DX, LX (the biggest seller), EX, EX-L, the sporty Si, as well as HF, Hybrid, and Natural Gas (due out this fall). For this comparison we had an EX-L sedan.

Ford's new Focus also comes in two body styles. The two-door coupe available previously is gone, but there's a new four-door hatchback to accompany the four-door sedan. There are four trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. A Focus electric is joining the lineup in late 2011. We had an SE hatchback here.

The Hyundai Elantra has the simplest lineup. The new Elantra is offered only as a four-door sedan, in GLS or Limited trim. (The Elantra Touring, a high-roof four-door hatchback, shares the Elantra name but is really a distinct model.) For this comparison, we had an Elantra Limited.

Who's Got the Looks
We'll wade only briefly into the subjective area of design. The new Civic reverently continues the design theme of its popular predecessor. The large cabin is visually elongated with a steeply raked windshield and backlight, while the hood and the trunk are abbreviated. The result is on single-arc profile, which has been freshened somewhat with more sculpted surfaces. Designers of the Elantra and the Focus appear to have given no thought whatsoever to maintaining a visual link to the previous models -- and rightly so, since both were dowdy and downmarket-looking. The Elantra's flowing lines may not be to everybody's taste, but they're certainly dramatic and stylish for a car in this class. The Focus bears a familial resemblance to other Ford of Europe products, with an oversize grille, raised creases along the body sides, a rising beltline, and a small greenhouse. Overall, we think the design works better on the hatchback than it does on the overly busy sedan, although in both cases it's very similar to the subcompact Fiesta.

The Civic's Familiar Surroundings
Consistency is again the name of the game for the new Civic's interior, which clearly follows the format laid down by the previous model. Under the large windshield is a very deep dashboard that, as in the last Civic, is bisected into two tiers. The upper binnacle houses a digital speedometer, flanked by readouts for fuel level and another one for fuel economy. Bracketing the speedometer are lights that glow green when the driver lets off the gas or blue when he gets on it. Set below the upper binnacle is the large, analog tachometer, which the driver sees through the small-diameter, three-spoke steering wheel. An additional, 6.5-inch LCD screen just offset to the right within the upper binnacle is new for 2012. It can display a variety of information, which the driver can scroll through using the relatively simple buttons on the steering wheel. Readouts include audio system info, Bluetooth phone info, turn instructions from the navigation system, trip computer info, or a wallpaper photo that you upload. Our EX-L was equipped with the optional navigation system. Its large touch-screen was fairly easy to use and we had no qualms with the system's logic. But the audio and nav-system buttons that surround it are tiny, and the whole units looks like its ten years old. The Civic's other switchgear is typical Honda: simple and of high quality. Aside from our top-spec EX-L model's leather seats, the cabin is otherwise fairly basic and unadorned. Interior space, though, is quite good -- slightly better than before despite unchanged exterior dimensions -- excepting rear-seat headroom under the sloping roof. And the comparatively generous window area makes the cabin feel large and airy

The Cockpit-like Cabin in the Focus
The design philosophy of the Focus cabin is definitely in contrast to that of the Elantra and the Civic. The driver's environment is more enveloping and less open. Although the dash slopes away from the occupants so as not to feel oppressive, the center console area is much higher and it flows right up into the center dash. A smattering of brushed-metal trim provides some relief in the mostly black interior, whose firm but supportive seats are upholstered in a grippy cloth (although leather is available). The Focus hatchback's rear seat is easier to get into and out of than the two sedans', but there's less legroom once you're in there. It's still adult-habitable, though. Of course, the Focus hatchback offers unmatched cargo-carrying utility, even before you fold the rear seats. Unlike the other two cars here, our Focus SE was not equipped with navigation (it can be had on the SEL and Titanium only), but it did have the optional MyFord and Sync package. This is not the same as the MyFordTouch touch-screen system, which is standard on the Titanium. This somewhat simpler system has two small screens, one in between the speedometer and tachometer and one in the center stack; they're accessed via a multi-function controller on the steering wheel (similar to the Civic's) and cell-phone-like buttons in the center of the dash -- the latter require a bit of a learning curve.

Three Fours
All three compacts feature four-cylinder engines; the Ford and Hyundai engines are new, while the Honda four is largely carryover. The Focus engine is the largest, at 2.0 liters, and it alone uses direct injection. Its power and torque ratings are the highest of the three at 160 hp and 146 pound-feet. The Elantra's 1.8-liter is next, at 148 hp and 131 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are more powerful than their predecessors. The Civic's four-cylinder, also 1.8 liters, is a modified version of the previous Civic engine, but its horesepower and torque figures are unchanged from before, at 140 hp and 128 pound-feet. The drivability characteristics of all three were remarkably similar, perhaps because they all make their peak torque within the relatively narrow range of 4300 and 4700 rpm. Their relative differences in horsepower were blunted by the cars' differences in curb weight, where we find the Civic to be the lightest, the Focus the heaviest and the Elantra in between. The uptake is that none of these cars is a sparkling performer off the line, but all three have sufficient gusto for passing and highway merging.

Mileage Matters
The Hyundai was the only car here with a six-speed transmission -- in fact, whether ordered with a manual or an automatic, all Elantras have six forward gears. That probably helped the put the Hyundai out in front in the fuel-economy race, with EPA ratings of 29 mpg city and that suddenly all-important 40-mpg highway number. With the Civic, you get only five forward gears whether you choose a manual or an automatic like we had here (only the Si gets a six-speed manual). Still, the Civic is only a tick behind the Elantra in both city and highway measures, at 28/39 mpg. Our Focus had a five-speed stick, but the Ford's automatic is a six-speed. Not surprisingly, the manual-transmission Focus is the less economical variant, rated at 26/36 mpg. Both Ford and Honda can advertise higher numbers: 40 mpg highway in the case of the Focus, and 41 mpg on the part of the Civic. But in both cases, those figures are only for special, high-mileage variants: the Focus SE with the SFE package, and Honda's Civic HF model, whereas all Elantras achieve the same EPA rating.

On the road
Ford has been making strides in the dynamic behavior of its small cars -- witness the Fiesta -- and that's clearly evident with the new Focus. The Focus felt particularly buttoned-down, and it had easily the best steering. The Honda proved to be a bit more eager to turn in than the Hyundai, exhibiting less understeer. It also rode notably better. We were less pleased, however, with the Civic's steering, which was rather vague on center. As impressive as the Hyundai was otherwise, it was somewhat disappointing dynamically. Its brakes were grabby and the suspension didn't do much to mask bad pavement. The Elantra's handling, though, was pretty good and its steering, while light, was not totally dead

Conclusions
The Elantra is an impressive effort and boasts a long list of superlatives. It gets the best gas mileage, has the largest interior and trunk, and the best electronics interface. Less surprising but no less important is the fact that it has the most equipment at the lowest price. The Elantra is a good $2000 cheaper than the Civic, and would offer similar savings over a comparably equipped Focus. For many people, that wraps it up right there. To choose the Civic over the Elantra, one would have to place a greater weight on more subjective qualities. The Honda cabin feels more airy and comfortable and is easier to see out of. We found that the Civic also rides better. Its power deficit isn't really an issue because it's the lightest car here, and its fuel economy is close enough to the Hyundai's that it would hardly make a difference in real life. The Civic has the composure of a bigger car, but the ease of use of a small one. The Focus was a bit of an outlier in this test because of the way it was equipped. We had lined up a more directly compatible version (a sedan with an automatic transmission) but it was damaged at the last minute and this sporty SE hatchback stepped in. Despite its lower spec, the Focus was our favorite car to drive, with its nicely weighted steering, natural clutch action, and responsive handling. True, the Focus was the least economical, but we enjoyed rowing its manual gearbox. The hatchback body style is a versatile configuration that neither competitor offers. The Focus cabin wasn't as stylish as the Elantra's but neither was it quite as pedestrian as the Honda's, although it is more intimate than both. In any event, the Focus was the best driver's car, and while they may not be the most important factor for most small-car shoppers, it's where our prejudice lies, so the Focus is our pick

Best-Selling Family Cars for 2011, So Far

What's the best-selling family car in America?

With automakers reporting March sales and an unexpected first place for the mid-size Nissan Altima as the best-selling sedan in America for the first time, the mid-size Toyota Camry still takes the top spot in first-quarter 2011 sales in the U.S. Toyota snags three of the top 10 spots in Q1 sales, while Chevrolet and Honda each have two, and Ford and Nissan one each.

Some of the shuffling around for the month and quarter is likely due to consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles, supply/assembly disruptions due to the Japanese earthquake, and heavy advertising by Nissan, among other factors.

March sales of the mid-size Toyota Prius hybrid were up 52 percent over March 2010. Sales of the all-new 2011 mid-size Hyundai Sonata and compact Elantra, built in Alabama, are up 55 percent over March 2010 and combined represent 68 percent of total Hyundai volume. The compact Chevrolet Cruze, number eight best-seller in the first quarter, is an all-new model and was edged out by the Chevy Impala large sedan for the 10th place in March sales by just 45 units.

The numbers, as reported by manufacturers, are as follows:

1 Toyota Camry 76,821 1 Nissan Altima 32,289

Porsche profit jumps on higher sales of revamped Cayenne

STUTTGART, Germany (Bloomberg) -- Porsche SE's car-making division reported a first-quarter profit gain after a revamp of the Cayenne boosted demand for the sport-utility vehicle.

Earnings before interest and tax "more than doubled" to 496 million euros ($728 million), the Stuttgart, Germany-based company said in a statement today, without providing a year-earlier figure.

Sales rose 10 percent to 2.28 billion euros.

Luxury car makers, including BMW AG and Mercedes-Benz, are anticipating record demand this year, boosted by growing wealth in China and a rebound in spending in the U.S. market.

Porsche, which is combining with Volkswagen AG, aims to double global sales to about 200,000 cars by 2018 by adding models such as a compact SUV and increasing sales in emerging markets.

Sales of the Cayenne, Porsche's best-selling model, increased 62 percent to 11,487 vehicles in the first quarter. Last year, Porsche launched the third generation of the model.

Deliveries of the four-door Panamera fell 5.5 percent to 4,715, while demand for the 911 sports car declined 17 percent to 4,750.

Porsche AG, the car-making unit, released first-quarter results for the first time after shifting to calendar-year reporting to align its operations with VW.

Porsche's fiscal year previously ended on July 31. Porsche SE, which sold 49.9 percent of the car-making business to VW, raised 4.9 billion euros in a share offering earlier this month.

The share sale will be used to cut debt and facilitate the merger with VW. The two companies agreed to merge in 2009 after Porsche racked up more than 10 billion euros in debt in its failed effort to gain control of VW.

Porsche SE holds 51 percent of Volkswagen's voting shares. The merger, which was slated for the second half, will probably be delayed until next year because of German legal obstacles, including an investigation into share-price manipulation allegations, Porsche said in February.
